What is NextDor:

Living NextDor, the Next Generation.

Here we are in the Northern California region living next door to one another but not engaged in each other's lives. We are the generations of young adults from our 20s to 40s at an important cusp in our lives and in a fast-evolving region.

It's our turn to explore our modern American and specifically Northern Californian Jewish identity through a common lens amidst the challenges of day-to-day life.

In June 2008, many of Northern California's young Jews gathered at a dynamic Shabbat dinner in an East Sacramento backyard for a phenomenal kosher meal sponsored by the Jewish Federation. We began a conversation about how to strengthen our identities. It was clear that each of us was seeking something but we needed more than the singles group and more than our chaverim of married folks.

We wanted a bridge across both which accurately describes community no matter what point in our personal relationships we find ourselves. Of course, we're all tremendously busy. So busy...so what?

Shortly we will gather again for another Shabbat and soon launch a series of events, and we'll turn up the heat on our conversation about identity and what it means to be a community.

NextDor presents an opportunity for each of us to thread Jewish culture, language, socializing, spirituality, Tikkun Olam, and other elements back into our lives or in some cases for the first time. Our community is more spread out than ever before and many new Jews are moving to our region without any social ties.

The challenge requires a small but committed group to generate a center of gravity that binds us beyond the individual synagogue to which we belong while being effective in cultivating shared and relevant experiences for the growing unaffiliated. That's the job and the vision of the Greater Northern California Jewish Federation and our evolving group of young adults. It's not an emergency, but Next Dor is the door opening to relevance.

We can be the central gathering point for information about all Jewish life opportunities anywhere in the region so that eventually any of us who wishes to know who's doing what doesn't need a compass to navigate where and when but simply has an easy path to check in whenever desired.
